One more diddy about the band, Lynyrd Skynyrd and lead singer Ronnie Van Zant. Yes, I know I just wrote about them and my favorite song, Simple Man.

There’s just something deeper in the band, their music and the plane crash that took three of their lives.

One of the band members, Ed King, who just died this week, said that the best way to try and understand Ronnie Van Zant would be to just read the lyrics of any six songs he wrote. He said it didn’t matter which six songs you selected. The combination of the six would show you who Van Zant really was.

We’ve already covered Simple Man. Now, we’re going to dig into Free Bird. Play the song as you continue reading…

If I leave here tomorrow
Would you still remember me?
For I must be traveling on, now
Cause there’s too many places I’ve got to see
But, if I stayed here with you, girl
Things just couldn’t be the same
Cause I’m as free as a bird now
And this bird you can not change
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
And this bird you can not change
And this bird you can not change
Lord knows, I can’t change
Bye, bye, baby, it’s been a sweet love
Though this feeling I can’t change
But please don’t take it so badly
Cause Lord knows I’m to blame
But, if I stayed here with you, girl
Things just couldn’t be the same
Cause I’m as free as a bird now
And this bird you’ll never change
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
And this bird you can not change
And this bird you can not change
Lord knows, I can’t change
Lord help me, I can’t change
Lord, I can’t change
Won’t you fly high, free bird, yeah

When asked about the song, Van Zant said:

“The lyric content of Free Bird is based on the idea of everyone being free. To me there’s nothing freer than a bird just flying wherever he wants to go. That’s what this country is all about… being free. I think everyone wants to be a free bird.”

He’s 100% right, isn’t he?

At our core, we want to be free. We want to control our lives. We want to be able to do what we want, whenever we want. Deep down, we fucking hate having someone else dictate anything in our lives.

Here’s some truth about me:

Every single time I’m in a situation where I’m supposed to something someone else tells me to do, I’m fucking pissed at myself. This is because I turned over control in some fashion. I turned over control by putting myself in some type of need and I despise neediness with a passion.

Granted I’m no longer needy and this doesn’t happen any more. But it did for years and I lived through these years with a quiet rage. I absolutely hated being on a leash to my job, my business, my clients and my employees. And for more honesty, I still struggle with this rage now when anyone (including loved ones) ask me to do something I don’t want to do.

Deep down, I’m fucking free bird.

SO ARE YOU.

We were not born to take orders from ANYONE. We were born to be FREE.

To be free, you must get fucking pissed off about any situation where you’re in need.

Neediness always enslaves us.
Neediness always takes away our freedom.

This is why the glorious Position of F You is so critically important.

Please understand it’s not about money.

It’s about being a FREE BIRD.

P.S. This song gets so much better as it continues. The same should apply to our lives.
